Darlings, we start the new year fresh with a powerful mindset and determination – and that begins with the question, are you working in your dreamjob or working towards it? If the answer is no… hold on tight because it’s time to MAKE THINGS HAPPEN. No excuses, no slacking ladies!
Whether it’s Youtube, e-commerce, Instagram modelling, a print-on-demand start up or anything else you have been dreaming about doing, this is the time to start if you haven’t already. Firstly, I know what you’re thinking. You’ve probably heard countless times (from the wrong people) that “the market is oversaturated” and “there’s no more place” and “they’re just the lucky ones” and other nonsense.
I genuinely believe the market can never be oversaturated with passionate people who are doing what they love. You can never have too many people in the world providing a service to others by using their greatest talents and skills!
I’m here to tell you that right now is the perfect time to get started on your dream.
When else are you going to start, in 1 year, 5 or 10? Because I promise if you wait that long, you will regret not starting sooner. When are you going to start, when you feel “ready”? That mythical time and location is relative. The sooner you start, the sooner you will gain more experience, traction and business know-how – and your future self will thank you for starting when you did, instead of later. Now, you may feel terrified at the idea of of failure or not knowing where to start, but remember that in all truth absolutely every successful business owner makes mistakes, it’s part of business.
What matters is that you learn from each lesson and do better next time – and no amount of books read or theory learned will get you that hands-on experience you need except by actually jumping in and getting things done. And if you need extra reassurance, the internet is bursting at the seams with an abundance of information on anything you can imagine. Pick a topic, a job, a business, an industry, google it, and you’ll find tons of resources at the tip of your fingers, just a click away.
Now, you still have to go a strategic way about building your business. And the first step is figuring out your PURPOSE. Now, make yourself a cup of tea, grab a pen and paper and let’s get started…
Answer each of the below questions. This is important down the line if you want to a solid foundation for your business – you need to know what’s the driving force behind your new enterprise.
Why are you doing this?
Who is it going to help?
What services will you be providing?
What are the principles and values of your business? Pick up to 4. This will be the cornerstone of your brand.
Speak about your brand. What energy will it inspire? What does it mean to you? What’s your tone of voice? What’s the goal of your brand?
Who will be your target audience?
What colors and feelings do you associate with your brand?
The better you know what your business will stand for, the stronger its foundation will be, and the easier it will be to keep scaling and evolving with time – because you’d already done your homework in the beginning. You’ll already know what logo and design to have for your website, you’ll already know the approach for your social media marketing and so on.
If the above questions overwhelm you, don’t fret. Just make sure to pick a few main questions and write down your answers that you’re most passionate about. Start with the basics – start with what you know! And then keep building on that.
If you need inspiration, here’s a quick brainstorming list for what you can do:
- Photography – Maybe you love taking photos, why not dip your toes into wedding photography or setting up a website where your followers can buy your prints while you travel around the world admiring its beauty?
- Makeup Artist – Create an Instagram/YT account if you don’t already have one, post your favorite looks and stay consistent while advertising your services to locals, starting with friends and acquaintances, with time it will gain traction.
- Writers – finish your books and research Amazon Kindle, ebooks and digital publishing, then site up your site, get your social media in order and publish those books you’ve always wanted!
- Artists – The internet is now a goldmine for artists if you have the patience and dedication to build your Instagram page (optional but very useful), build a steady following, then branch out into Redbubble, Society6, Shopify or other e-commerce platforms & print-on-demand websites. You just have to keep creating – your heart’s passion.
- Graphic design / Web design – set up an online portfolio and start working as a freelancer using the many websites available nowadays – Freelancer.com, Fiverr, Upwork, etc.
- Anything else you can think of, there’s probably a market for it on social media and consequently in the world. Especially on Youtube, people love to watch videos on all kinds of topics – beauty, sports, vlogs, tips and advice, the list is endless.
You see, there are so many options and so many ways of going about things. Most often, what holds people back in making the first step towards their dream career is 1) fear 2) not knowing where to start 3) not knowing whether it’s possible.
So confront each one until there’s no obstacle between you and your dream. By taking a leap of faith, doing your research and looking up other creators/business owners in a similar niche, you may find the inspiration and the spark of fire you need to kick that business into gear. You see, seeing others succeed in a domain or industry you want to delve into actually helps your mind map the path for that journey.
